358 Update – 11/26/2021

The following is a list of accomplishments over the past 2 years with 358. While we’ve had our challenges like everyone else, we have managed to knock out a long list of items to bring 358 ever closer to being back in service. We still have things to do, and our need for volunteer help is always there, we are certainly seeing the fruits of labor from the past 5 years and it won’t be much longer now.
  • Traction motor cables, jumpers, lots of crimps!

  • Much rewiring work in the electrical cabinet

  • Set the Aux Gen in and lined up

  • Cleaned and checked, Main Gen, brush holders, installed new brushes

  • Installed new walkways both sides of long hood

  • Installed cab window shades

  • Installed throttle controller

  • Installed pre-lube pump

  • Installed Air Dryer with custom built mount

  • Ran new AC power lines from Main Gen to fan controls

  • Repaired both sand boxes, installed new drop pipes in front box. New sand traps acquired, need to be installed

  • New Traction Motor blower boots

  • Installed front class lights, step box lights, repaired other ground and walkway lights

  • Rebuilt fan controls

  • Reassembled the fuel system

  • Cleaned and inspected load regulator

  • Cleaned and inspected main reservoirs

  • Reassembled air system

  • Added fuel treatment to 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel

  • Misc carbody repairs: Steel straps over the hood sections, cleaned up drop steps, added step locks, “trim” pieces for where old ditch lights were at.

  • Various air control lines repaired

  • Rebuilt the reverser gear (using donor parts from Bellevue)

  • Fabrication, and installation of front and rear Ditch Lights

  • Acquired an Event Recorder Unit – Horizon Rail

  • Purchased Digital Transition Control – presently being planned in schematics and soon to be installed

  • Purchased and installed Environmental Retention Tank – holds airbox oil drippings.

  • Mounted the bell, engineer side behind the fuel tank

  • TM brush holders donated,awaiting finishing

  • Cab heaters, fan motors rebuilt, heaters cleaned

  • Replaced numerous door latches

  • Inspected the prime mover

  • Started the prime mover – diesel!
