358 Update – 1/28/2022

On Saturday Keith personally delivered the new governor and after a tour around the shop we started working on swapping out the governors.  There was a lever arm that needed to come off the old and installed on the new.  There is a very particular way that the arm lines up, with a missing tooth on the shaft that provides the proper alignment.  Once that was done, we rigged up some rope and hoisted the governor into place.

We’ll be replacing the oil lines to the governor to flex hose, while we have the lines off, and the “standard” is flexible hose, this will ensure that we have solid oil flow to and from the governor and down to the load regulator.  We’ll also be replacing the pins and bearings that are in the throttle linkage that comes from the governor to both sides of the top rack and what controls the fuel flow to the injectors.  All of those bearings were seized, and worn.

Next steps will be to wire in the new harness, and confirm all throttle signals Idle to Run 8, from the control stand all the way to the governor plug.

While Mr. Mellin was in the shop with us, we looked over other areas of the 358, mostly diesel engine related, and on the accessory rack.  He provided us with many tips and tricks for the EMD prime mover, years of his experience were very appreciated as he shared this information.  The volunteers who were present all said afterwards, they were going to write notes so as not to forget all the great information discussed throughout the day.
